Never forget that walking away from something unhealthy is brave – Mandy Hale
As we approach the new year, it’s a good time to review the year that is almost complete. Not for the purpose of judging where you missed the mark, or what didn’t manifest for you. Instead, to celebrate all of the experiences you've had. Whether you judge them as good, bad or ugly.
Let me remind you...
You are not the same person you were when this year started. You’ve grown through every single experience. You’ve learned so much about yourself, maybe more than expected. You’ve outgrown some things too. Perhaps there are people, places or situations that no longer work for you.
Sometimes letting go can feel really hard
Believe me, I know. Maybe you've loved someone but the relationship is no longer working. Or you've been resistant to moving from your home even though living there causes stress and discomfort. Perhaps you've stayed in a job that no longer fuels your fire because you aren't sure what you want to do next.
There’s no judgment here!
We’ve all done this. I’ve done it. I often say that nothing leaves me without my nail marks in it. And while I’ve worked a bunch on letting go with more ease, it can still feel like a challenge. Especially if we are scared to make a change.
But as I’m approaching the doorway to 2019...
I want to be more purposeful and intentional about what I bring with me into the new year. And I want to be clear about what I’m leaving at the door as I step through. I encourage you to do the same.
Can you recognize some thing(s) that are no longer a positive part of your journey?
You don’t need to take any big action right at the moment. Instead, just start to identify which things might not be worth lugging with you into the new year.
You can get a good indication about which areas to look at by simply tuning in to how things feel. Look for things that feel really heavy. That are weighting you down. That make you sad.
Make a list
Be gentle here
Don't beat yourself up for still holding on
When you look at your list, are there obvious and easy things you can leave at the door? Start there!
For the more difficult decisions...
Let them percolate. You don’t need to make final decisions now. Honestly, you know what needs to be released but you also cannot release anything until you are 100% ready.
Be open to the possibility that releasing these things will really serve you.
Even if there is discomfort in the process.
From my experience, when it is time to let something go, you will know. The simple act of identifying the need is enough for the Universe to start the shifting process.
Leave what you can
Intend to be open to releasing what needs to go. The more you leave at the door, the clearer you can start the new year.
And doesn't that feel just a little bit better to you?
